I just got off a call with a client. We’ve been working together for a couple of years now, but I’ve recently started writing more copy for him and having a bigger role in the overall marketing strategy.
The first thing he said to me when we hopped on the call this morning?
“John, I was thinking about you last night.”
Awwwwwe shucks blush
The reason he was thinking about me?
Well, I’ve freed up a metric fvckton of his time over the past few months. Before, he was still writing a lot of the emails and involving himself in matters that, frankly, he and his business have outgrown. And while he’s a great copywriter in his own right (despite not being a “copywriter”), the truth is, the longer an owner drowns himself in the day-to-day minutia of the business (whether writing copy, handling customer support, posting on social media, what have you), the more the business suffers.
And that, my friend, is the best way to provide value.
Regardless of the service you offer or how good (or bad) you are at providing your service, at the end of the day, the most important thing to a business owner is their time.
Not only is that something all service providers can provide their clients, but it will be the most valuable thing to your client (even if you’re writing world-class copy, world-class SEO, or any other professional service).
More:
Freeing up their time, especially if they’re the “figurehead” of the business (as most business owners are), is also the best way to unlock growth and even make you look better at your job.
As a business matures, the biz owner’s role also matures: From the day-to-day to the year-to-year. From the weeds to the 30,000 foot view. From the copywriter/customer support/website designer/blogger to the figurehead who’s free to create more content and have more important convos with more important people.
The reverse is also true here:
A business owner who fails to relinquish control and duties will stuff his biz in an early grave.
As the saying goes:
What got you to where you are won’t get you to where you wanna go.
Are you constantly running around like a chicken with its head chopped off, running from fire to fire to fire in your business?
Hit reply, and let me take the emails off your plate. Not only will your revenue increase, but so will your free time.
And that is priceless.
John
