How to get more done in a day than most get done in a week

Writer's picture: John BrandtJohn Brandt

Earlier this week, as I helped Peanut wash dishes, my phone met a surprising puddle on the counter. The audio of whatever podcast I was listening to became distorted. And so, instead of risking the speakers, I filled a cup with rice and plopped my phone into it.

And there it sat for the next 24 hours.

Those 24 hours were the most productive 24 hours of my life.

Not only did I write more copy, but I also spent my free time in better ways: Reading sales letters, reading fiction books, planning and prodding, chit-chatting with Peanut.

I know this will shock exactly nobody reading this, but half the reason I was so damn productive was simply because I didn’t have distractions.

The smartphone, while an incredible invention, has also figured out how to hijack dopamine receptors in innocent human brains. And this may be our downfall. Or not. Who knows. I certainly don’t.

But what I do know is this:

Besides playing music (which I can easily play on my laptop too, especially the new laptop that can handle all my desktops and Chrome windows and tabs without going haywire), my phone provides absolutely zero productive value for my work.

Before I had to put my phone in rice, I would’ve lied and said that my phone…

  • Makes finding testimonials in a client’s Facebook group easier

  • Lets me check emails so I can see if any “fires” break out in my clients’ businesses

  • Assists my research whenever I’m writing a new email

Or another such excuse.

But the 24 hours without my phone made me see these as the excuses they are.

Anyway, I recommend you try turning off your phone for 24 hours too to see how productive and at peace you are.

Methinks it may become something I do more often. (I can’t remember the last time I had my phone turned off for so long.)

One way to feel better about turning off your phone is when the sales keep coming in. And one way to make the sales keep coming in is by letting me handle your email strategy and implementation.

Wanna see why?

Hit reply, and let’s set up a quick chat.
