How Jesus would handle writer’s block

Writer's picture: John BrandtJohn Brandt

Despite not writing any manuscripts or even so much as a letter, I would venture out to make the completely uneducated guess that Jesus never suffered from writer’s block.

Or rather, He never would’ve suffered from it, had writing been a bigger part of His life.

The blank screen, or blank paper, or perhaps more accurately, blank piece of papyrus ain’t something Jesus ever would’ve experienced.

And you know what?

Besides a lingering suspicion that I was completely wrong when I went down an atheist and even agnostic route a few years back, I’m not the most religious guy you’d ever meet. And even I turn to Jesus sometimes when the writer’s block is particularly strong.

Here’s what I mean:

One of my favorite sayings from Jesus himself comes from the Book of Matthew. I don’t know all the details that led to this quote, I’m not a biblical scholar nor do I play one on TV. But the gist of the situation (at least as I see it) follows:

Jesus is “coaching” his followers and sharing that any work they do that serves Him won’t be difficult. In fact, it will be the opposite: Light and easy.

This is how Jesus lived his life. If’n you believe the tales, then, well, Jesus lived one of the most inspiring, difficult, and downright holy lives. But he never thought it to be hard.

And nothing exemplifies Jesus’s “mindset” (if’n you’d even call it that) then the line that I always think back to when writer’s block is strong, or my workload feels particularly difficult and unexciting:

“For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.”

And I’d venture to say that if Jesus thought his yoke was easy and his burden was light, then your excuses about writer’s block, a difficult client or circumstance, or however hard a difficult goal is to achieve ain’t nothing more than an excuse.

Try this next time you get stuck. Just repeat the bolded line above to yourself, believe it, then do it—to quote my middle school football coach.

Best part?

You can always return to this feeling and mantra.

Every time I do it, my life, workload, and difficult situations get a little easier. A little lighter. A little more possible.

Understand this and prosper.

Anywho:
