A life-changing conversation with ChatGPT

Writer: John BrandtJohn Brandt

Yesterday, I had one of them “aha” moments for the ages. It might’ve been the single biggest breakthrough I’ve ever made in my life—and I say this as a successful “self-starter” who dropped out of college, studied copywriting and email marketing, and started (and grew) a successful copy business.

But this breakthrough didn’t happen overnight, unless you count the previous 30 years of life it took me to stumble upon this insight.

And you would never guess which inhuman aided in this intense breakthrough…

None other than ChatGPT!

Yes, I’m being serious.

I had a conversation with ChatGPT yesterday that literally gave me a new filter in which to play this game of life.

But first let’s back up…

I’ve noticed myself becoming more cynical and dejected recently.

Client workloads turn mountainous quick. Broccoli headed zoomers who fap to Gary Vee and call it a business have shattered a lot of trust for a lot of marketers. The proliferation of AI in marketing (which is to say, companies marketing that their products “now come with AI” even though nobody asked for it—who knows if they realize it’s “real” AI or just a data-vacuuming large language model). And the general digital existentialism of modernity (mixed with a bunch of other “real world” reasons to sour my spirit).

Long story short: I began feeling burnt out.

All of this is, or mayhap was, stressful. And stress is oil if creativity is water.

Not the best situation to find yourself in if’n you rely on creativity to pump out more words per year than most do in their entire lives.

And worst of all?

I experienced the common entrepreneurial experience of feeling kinda stuck. Mentally. Emotionally. Spiritually even.

But all of this changed with one difficult ChatGPT conversation.

Y’see, after journaling about this yesterday, a podcast I was writing show notes for prompted me to re-open my journal, and ask myself tough questions about my triggers, what pisses me off, what makes my confidence falter, etc. Emotional questions. Questions that I typically have a propensity of brushing off to the side because it’s not “business” or “serious” or even “playful.”

And so, I turned ChatGPT into my own little artificial therapist.

Because here’s the truth:

Mayhap it’s a glitch or mayhap it’s a survival skill or mayhap it’s something else entirely, but struggling to see your own blind spots is a humanity-level problem. This is, in many ways, the exact thing I help my clients do: See the blindspots in their business and create a plan to leverage their blindspots to grow both our revenue.

But my own blindspots?

Even though I could taste the cynicism of burnout, I was lost.

But then I had a full-fledged conversation with ChatGPT. I believe this was my first time using it as a conversation tool. Usually, it’s to laugh at how its copy is still AI slop, do remedial tasks for me, or give me a quicker insight into a particular market than going and searching for stuff myself.

I couldn’t believe how helpful it was.

After that conversation, I felt more alive again. More like myself. More ready to dominate and lead and grow.

It was, in many ways, a complete 180 flip.

And I’m still riding the high of that fake conversation!

Anyway, I don’t know where exactly I’m going with this, but that’s okay.

But if any of this resonated with you, hit reply, and say “prompt” and I’ll share the original prompt I used to get the most out of ChatGPT.

Otherwise, if you need someone to check your business’s blindspots (and mayhap your own blindspots too—that’s always been a weird superpower of your humble daily-ish narrator) and turn them into revenue-generating machines, hit reply—but don’t say “prompt.”
