Unbeknownst to muah, Klaviyo’s throwing a conference, and I figured since it’s been a minute since I’ve humblebragged in these emails, now ought to be the perfect time.
Here’s how I came to know about this conference:
Yesterday, as I was minding my business, I get an email from one of my clients. It’s a forwarded email from Klaviyo, announcing their OWN IT conference.
What does this forwarded email from my client say?
====
Maybe there is something new here ... although I suspect that you could possibly be one of the speakers instead of the audience.
====
Correctamundo!
I should be one of the speakers instead of the audience. But, as becomes painfully obvious by looking at the speaker lineup for this ditty, Klaviyo’s more interested in, well, I’m not entirely sure to be honest.
Here’s what I mean:
I did not recognize a single person from their conference’s lineup.
Not a single one.
And while fapping to Klaviyo partners, marketing agencies, or tech gurus ain’t my cup of tea… I’m still a little shocked that I know not a single speaker speaking at this conference nor have I heard of any of the companies they come from.
But here’s what I suspect is happening here:
Back when I worked at a design agency, and my email chops weren’t quite as up to snuff as they are today (this was damn near 4 years ago now at this point), I realized something which I suspect is also happening at OWN IT.
What’d I realize?
Well, a good offer lifts all boats.
Which means:
When you have a good offer, you can “get away” with a lot of email mistakes, advertising mistakes, and business mistakes.
Some of my co-workers at the design agency literally did not do a damn thing all day. They sat with Slack open while they goofed off and did whatever they wanted. Our email strategy, if you could even call it that, primarily meant offering discount after discount. Many of our ads sucked, but we had a good offer, and that lifted all boats.
It even got the owner of said company speaking gigs at conferences like Klaviyo’s OWN IT. And at said speaking gigs, he would usually steal Wake Up Warrior’s trainings and just repeat them, almost verbatim.
I’m not hating, I’m jus’ sayyyyyin.
That’s the vibes I got from looking at Klaviyo’s OWN IT speaker lineup:
Successful owners who succeed, not because they’re Klaviyo or email marketing experts, but because they have a good offer with a lot of hungry customers.
Not to say there’s nothing to learn from them… but I doubt any of it has to do with Klaviyo or email marketing.
Anywho:
I was still honored that my client thought I should be speaking. I don’t know how many freelancers can boast a testimonial like that…
Wanna see why my client said that about me (besides the obvious fact of generating over $100k from email every month like clockwork)?
Hit reply, let’s set up a quick chat, and if’n we’re a good fit, who knows, mayhap you’ll be forwarding me next year’s OWN IT lineup, saying how I should be a speaker too…
John
